About Department

The department of Zoology offers a two year post graduate course in Zoology with major thrusts on Modern Biology, viz, Cell & Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, Bioinformatics, Instrumentation, Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Stress Physiology, etc. The M.Phil programme of the Department has also been suitably designed to equip the students with both theoretical and practical knowledge on Cellular and Molecular Biology. In research, the Department has mainly pursued its interest in Cytogenetics, Genotoxicity, Cytochemistry, Cell Physiology and Biochemistry, Sericulture, Vector Biology and Biology of ageing.

Master Degree (M.Sc. - Zoology)

About Course Programme

M.Sc Zoology is 2years course programme with 24 seats, which constitutes 4 Semesters of 6 months duration each. At the end of each semester there is 1 End-semester examination consisting of 3 theory papers of 3 hours duration carrying 60 marks each and 1 practical examination of 6 hours durations carrying 100 mark. . There is 1 mid-semester examination carrying 15 marks for each theory paper.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

Students’ intake is made strictly on merit basis taking the career and the marks secured in the qualifying examination into consideration.

Master Degree (M.Sc. - Biotechnology)

About Course Programme

The Department of Biotechnology was initiated in the year 2005 at Berhampur University. It offers two year post graduate course in Biotechnology with major thrusts on Modern Biology, viz, Cell & Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics, Instrumentation, Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Biophysics, Bioethics etc. The department also produced few M.Phil students. In research, the Department has mainly pursued its interest in Cytogenetics, Bioinformatics, Genotoxicity, Cytochemistry, Cell Physiology and Biochemistry, Sericulture, Vector Biology and Biology of ageing.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

Any person who has passed the qualifying degree examination possessing B.Sc/B.Pharm./MBBS/B.V.Sc./ B.F.Sc./BE or B.Tech. in Bio-technology/B.Sc. Agr. with a minimum of 45% of marks in the aggregate or in the honours subject for the candidates belonging to the general category (a minimum of 40% of marks in the aggregate or a minimum of 45% in the honours subjects for the candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes) can enter into the course programme.

M.Phil

About Course Programme

It is one year programme with the session from January to December. The admitted students have to appear one theory examination consisting of two theory papers. Each student has to produce one dissertation containing the research output.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

Admission into all M. Phil courses shall be done through an entrance test followed by an interview. The Test shall comprise of one paper of 100 marks (50 marks Objective Type Questions and 50 marks for short-answer type questions) of two hour duration. The Question Paper shall cover all the papers taught at the Post-Graduate level of the concerned subject of Berhampur University. The candidates should secure minimum 50% of marks in the entrance test (40% of marks for candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) in order to be eligible to appear at the interview. The selection for admission into M.Phil. Courses shall be made on the basis of the career marks and the marks secured in the interview.

Class Schedule

On each working day there shall be two theory classes and in the rest time the students shall work for their dissertations in the respective research laboratories and in the library.

Ph.D.

About Course Programme

There is one pre-Ph.D. course of six months duration. The syllabus, theory examination pattern are same to that of M. Phil course.

How to Enter into the Course Programme

There shall be one URET examination conducted by the University, once each year. URET qualified candidates are required to appear one viva-voce test conducted by the department. The qualified candidates can admit into the pre-Ph.D. course, which is of six months duration, like that of M. Phil. Those who qualify in the pre-Ph.D. examination can go for registration for Ph. D.

Prof.Subasini Pattnaik, M.Sc., M.Phil, Ph.D is presently a Professor of Zoology at the Berhampur University. She started her professional career as a Senior research Fellowship in DST, 1984 – 1987 and later went on to be a Senior Research Assistant in Central Silk Board at CSR & IT, West Bengal, 1987-1991. Her duties as a teacher began with the Lectureship. She joined as a Lecturer, P.G. Dept. of Zoology, Berhampur University from 1991-2001, then appointed as a reader from 2001-2009 and now continuing as professor from 2009 onwards.In the last several years at BU, she has held several administrative positions including; Head of the Department, Zoology; Co-ordinator BIF Center, Co-ordinator Bio-technology self-financing course; Appointed as N.S.S Programme officer; Superintendent of a hostel; Associate Vice-President athletic club. She has also been a member of several boards and committees of BU, including the Board of Governors, Rusa;NAAC, Academic Audit; Scrutiny Committee of BUSU and other sister association; Electoral Body Member to the BUSU and sister association. She has supervised and assisted the management for organizing North-East Zone inter University Kabaddi (Women) tournament and 41st Inter college athletic meet of Berhampur University. She has produced 7 Ph.D. and 20 M.Phil students. Her research has been published as 23 articles in edited volumes and 20 workshop/conference proceeedings at National and International level. Also she has attented several orientation and refresher courses. Her research interests include Mosquito Cytogenetics and Sericulture.

Dr. (Mrs.) Gitanjali Mishra, M.Sc., M.Phil, Ph.D is presently a Professor of Zoology at the Berhampur University. She started her professional career as a Junior Research Fellow (JRF-UGC) in 1983 at the P.G. Department of Zoology, BU and later went on to be a Senior Research Fellow (SRF-CSIR) and a Senior Research Associate (SRA-CSIR). She also spent three years as a Pool Officer (CSIR) at the same university. Her duties as a teacher began with the Lectureship at the NSB Mahavidyalaya, Nuvapada in 1999, where she continued for 8 years till spring of 2007. Post that, she joined the P.G. Department of Zoology, BU in March 2007 as a Reader and was appointed as a Professor in January 2016. In the last eight years at BU, she has held several administrative positions including Director, School of Pharmaceutical Education and Research; Head of the Department, Zoology; Course Coordinator of the Distance Education Centre; Superintendent of a hostel; and Secretary of the Alumni Association of the department. She has also been a member of several boards and committees of BU, including the Senate, the Academic Council, the Board of Studies, the DRDC, the Standing Committee and Advisory Board of Women Studies Research Centre, and the Ethical Committee (NAAC). She serves as a member of several committees and executive councils in other colleges of Odisha. She has also been Member of the Editorial Board of the Indian Journal of Biology since 2014. As a research guide, she has produced 6 Ph.D. and 19 M.Phil students. Her research has been published as 56 articles in edited volumes and 23 workshop/conference proceeedings. She has also coauthored the book, Polyherbal mixture in Syrup Base: A Better Treatment for Arthritis. Her research interests include Physiology and Biochemistry, Pharmacy and Biodiversity, while her teaching specializations span areas of Physiology, Developmental Biology, Taxonomy, Histochemisty, Ecology and Biochemistry.

Dr Prasanna Kumar Dixit, M.Sc. Zoology Gold Medallist of Berhampur University got his Ph.D. Degree of this University in 2002 availing the fellowships like JRF-NET (CSIR) and SRF. He started his teaching career as Faculty Member in ICFAI University, Tripura, Agartala in 2002 and continued till 2011. In 2012, he joined the Post Graduate Department of Zoology as Reader. During the last 3 years of Active service in the University, he has handled some key administrative positions in the University like Head of the Department, Member-Academic Council, Senate, Superintendent-P.G. Boys’ Hostel, Member-NAAC Steering Committee, Research Coordinator, Asst. Coordinator-Biotechnology (SFC), Member-DRDC, and Member-Board of Studies of various courses apart from the teaching activity in the Department. He has guided 02 Research Scholars for their Ph.D. degree and many other are currently working. He has published several research papers in Journals of National and International repute, reviewed many manuscripts for it publication in many reputed journals and adjudicated Ph.D. theses for the award of Ph.D. Degree. He is also the Life member of Different Professional Bodies of Biological Relevance. His research interest includes Stress Physiology and Biochemistry, Gerontology, Drugs Nano-suspensions etc.

Dr Tapan Kumar Barik got his Ph.D. Degree from University of Delhi in 2010. He started his research career as Project Coordinator at National Institute of Malaria Research, New Delhi and continued till 2011. In 2011, he joined as lecturer in the Post Graduate Department of Zoology, Berhampur University. He was awarded with Raman fellowship for post doctoral research at Huck institute of Life Sciences by University Grant Commission for one year in 2013. He is guiding 05 Research Scholars for their Ph.D. degree. He has published several research papers in Journals of National and International repute, reviewed many manuscripts for publication in many reputed journals. He has contributed several book chapters in the national and international book. Currently, he has published two mitochondrial gene sequences in NCBI gene bank. His research interest includes Vector Biology, Radiation Biology and Nanotechnology. During the last 5 years of active service in the Berhampur University, he has handled some key administrative positions like Programme Officer-NSS unit, Radiological Safety Officer, Assistant Superintendent of P.G. Boys’ Hostel, Associate Coordinator-Biotechnology (SFC), Member-DRDC, and Member-Board of Studies apart from the teaching activity in the Department.

Mr Jaya Kishor Seth obtained his Master degree in Zoology from Sambalpur University. He has been teaching in the P.G.Department of Zoology, Berhampur University since 2011. Prior to joining the department he worked in the Sunderban Regional Centre, Zoological Survey of India from 2008 to 2011.He has also qualified the Junior Lectureship Examination under Orissa Public Service Commission and served in a college for brief period of 3 month. At present he is pursuing his Doctoral degree in area of marine fish diversity and DNA barcoding. His other area of interest includes survey and documentation of animal diversity, cytogenetics and conservation biology.

Mr Laxman Kumar Murmu, obtained his M.Sc. and M.Phil. degrees in Zoology from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He has been teaching in the Department of Zoology, Berhampur University since 2012. He is currently working for his doctoral degree on Molecular assessment of drug resistant status of Plasmodium falciparum and his research interest includes Molecular parasitology and Biochemistry.

Alumini

The Alumni Association, Department of Zoology, Berhampur University has been established in 1994. The past and present students and the teachers of the department are the members of the association. At present, there are about 600 members. Every year the alumni meet with the current student members of the department in a reunion function during the Annual Day celebration of the Zoology Seminar and it is followed by the General Body meeting of the association. Besides, the Executive Body of the Association meets two to three times each year. The basic objectives of the association are to reunite the past and present students so that they can know and interact with each other; to extent financial help to the needy members; to encourage the present students in their academics by instituting different medals and prizes; to felicitate the retiring members of the association; and give oration to the members for their outstanding contributions in the field of science and to the society at large. In the reunion function, each year, one Gold Medal, one Silver Medal and 10 different cash prizes are awarded to the present and just pass-out students of the department for their significant achievements. Besides, a bulletin is published each year citing different activities of the association.
