It is the Youngest Regular Department established in 1991 the Silver Jubilee year of the University with support of UGC & DoE (Govt. of India) as one of the 11 such Departments in the country to cater the requirement of Research Personnel in the field of Electronics & Telecommunication. It runs credit based M. Sc. (Electronic Science) in regular mode & M. Tech. (Electronic Information System) in semester pattern. It is also producing doctorates of excellent caliber, well-informed about the state of art technologies. It is well equipped with good laboratories, departmental library and furnished class rooms. Among the host of activities of the department of electronic science, the major ones are teaching and research. It has under taken many sponsored projects by UGC, DRDO, CSIR and DST. The faculty has succeeded in keeping a lively atmosphere among the students, with timely upgradations in the curriculum and innovative teaching techniques. The teaching is closely coupled with the research activities of the department. The students and faculty is having good interaction with institute of repute within the country and abroad. At present around 15 students graduate from the department every year with more than 400 students having passed out of the department uptil now, who are all pursuing successful ventures / careers.
Master Degree (M.Sc.)
This course is being offered since the inception of the Department of Electronic Science in the year 1991-92, with joint sponsorship of University Grants Commission (UGC) and the Department of Electronics (presently Ministry of Information Technology), Government of India, to cater the need for Electronics personnel in the R & D sector of Government organizations, public sector, and private sector units of the country. At present, it is a CBCS based four semester course with a six month project component in the final semester.
The program aims at training the students in the area of Semiconductor Electronics, Digital and Analog Electronics, DSP, Material Science and RF&Microwave Technology. The students also have to undergo courses in computer oriented numerical techniques. The course structure intends to inculcate strong laboratory skills so that the student can take up independent projects which will help to be an entrepreneur. In addition, the course caters to the requirements of providing complete exposure to NET syllabus for Electronics farmed by the U.G.C.
For admission into M. Sc. (Electronic Science) course, the Admission is based on the marks secured in all examinations starting from HSC, +2 and Degree basing upon the aggregate percentage of marks. The qualifying degree is BES or BIT or BSc with Physics and/or Electronics & Chemistry/Mathematics/Computer Science.
The admissions are held by the Department normally in the month of May-June. Total number of seats of the programme are 26. Out of which 16.25% are reserved for SC(4 seats), 22.5% for ST(6 seats). One seat is reserved for candidates who have participated in Senior National/International Level competitions in Sports/Games representing the state concerned/India, one seat for physically challenged student.
Classes are conducted between 11.00 am – 4.30 pm on all working days.
From the session 2007-08, the Department is offering M.Tech. (EIS) Course in Self-Finance mode. It is a 4 Semester Course consisting of taught courses as well as project works. The first two semesters builds the background through taught courses and Technical Seminar writing. The last two semesters are meant for project work, where students work rigorously in a focused area of Electronic & Information Systems under a qualified supervisor.
To enter into this course a student must have proficiency in the courses of B.Tech. (Electronics & Telecommunication or equivalent) or M. Sc. (Electronic Science/ Information Systems/ Information Technology/ Electronics & Telecommunication/ Physics with Electronics Specialization or equivalent). The admission is made through a process decided by the Chairman, P.G. Council from time to time.
Classes are conducted beyond normal working hours as well as on Sundays & other holidays as per convenience of the Guest Instructors.
Presently the Department offers Doctoral programme in Electronic Science. There are four specializations to choose from: Electronic Materials & Devices, Instrumentation, RF & Wireless Communication Systems and Signal Processing.
Candidates seeking admission into the Doctoral course are required to possess an MSc degree in Electronic Science or Equivalent with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate. Students are selected through URET(University Research Entrance Test, conducted by BU)/UGC-NET/CSIR-NET. Candidates so qualified for the Research programme have to undergo a six-months course work and clear the same by securing at least 50% marks in each paper in order to become eligible to apply for registration. A synospsis relating to the research problem on which the candidate intends to work for his/her thesis has to be submitted along with the duly filled in application for registration.
For the taught course, the schedule is same as that of M. Tech. (EIS).
The seminar library is well equipped with more than 1200 text and reference books and four volumes of journals catering to the needs of students and teachers. Apart from books related to curriculum advanced books are also available which help in research activities of the students. Sample copies supplied by publishers and books donated by alumni are added each year to the library. It is maintained by the Office Assistant of the Department.
Minimum required computing facilities are at present available. Expansions are being planned for early implementation.
There are Six Labs: Device Lab, Analog Ckt. Lab, Digital Ckt. Lab, Computing Lab, Microprocessor Lab & Communication Lab.
