About Department

Introduction

Established in 1976, the department offers a two year Master’s Degree course, one year M.Phil. course and Doctoral programme in Commerce. At present the department is also offering a two-year professional course on finance, namely Master of Finance and Control (MFC) under self-financing mode.

During more than three decades of its existence, the department has contributed significantly for the cause of promoting and developing commerce and business education in the State of Orissa in general and in the southern (tribal) region of the State, in particular.

The department has been offering M.Phil. programme since 1976. In addition to this the department is also actively engaged in various research activities leading to Ph.D. degree. The major thrust area of research is Financial Management, Bank Management, Marketing Management and Institutional Financing.

The department has also organised various seminars, workshops, refresher courses, training camps and conferences at frequent intervals in collaboration with UGC, UNICEF, ICAI, Bhubaneswar Stock Exchange and DIC. Since its inception, the department holds the editorial / registered office of the Orissa Commerce Association and published the Orissa Journal of Commerce till 2008.

The department attracts memorial endowment funds for award of scholarship to the meritorious students. Currently three such memorial funds namely Narasingha Padhi Memorial Fund, Justice Abhimanyu Misra Memorial Fund and Binod Bihari Biswasroy Memorial Fund are in operation.

The experienced faculty members of the department have added significantly to the existing store of knowledge in the field of commerce and business by publishing more than 70 text as well as reference books. Besides more than 300 research articles have been published by the faculty in various leading national and international journals.

Since inception, the Department has already produced more than 100 Ph.D and 155 M.Phil scholars. The department has also organised a large number of seminars, workshops, refresher courses, training camps and conferences at regular intervals in collaboration with UGC, UNICEF, ICAI, Banks and DIC. The Department has also restructured the course curriculum in consonance with the recently issued UGC model syllabus to make the Degree technology savvy and job oriented.

About Course

The curriculum of the course is uniquely designed to impart knowledge and develop skill sets in future manager and financial analyst which are essential for their survival in a globally networked economy.

The department prepares the students to understand the emerging business trends, foresee changes and to gather new skills to improve efficiency across the business enterprise. The department has also restructured the course curriculum in consonance with the recently issued UGC model syllabus to make the Degree technology savvy and job oriented.

The two year Post Graduate degree of Commerce encompasses subjects like security analysis, portfolio management, financial institutions and markets, financial services and markets, business research & communication, international business, MIS which are evolving with the passage of time along with the traditional commerce subjects like management concept, advanced statistical analysis, marketing management, corporate financial accounting, accounting for managers, accounting standards and corporate reporting and computer application in business.

In consonance with changing times and contemporary demands, the Post-Graduate Department of Commerce, introduced a two-year fulltime professional programme leading to the award of Master of Finance and Control (MFC) degree. As a self-financing venture, the MFC programme is relentlessly geared to groom young minds in the area of finance and preparing them for delivering value to the nation and society at large.

The future finance professionals need to be equipped with the emerging areas of finance like corporate finance, quantitative techniques, management information system, merchant banking, portfolio management, computer application in business, international financial management, strategic management, insurance management, e-commerce, derivative and risk management, corporate tax planning, etc. The MFC programme aims at imparting skill and managerial competence for occupying the corporate hierarchy in the financial services industry.

How to Enter into the Course

For admission into M.com course the applicant must have

  • passed +3 Commerce Examination securing given percentage of marks as prescribed in the prospectus .

For admission into M.F.C course the applicant must be

  • Any Graduate  securing given percentage of marks as prescribed in the prospectus .
  • Entrance Examination    .

D.Litt.

D.Lit Programme is also run by the department. Prof. B. B. Mishra was the 1st recipient of D.Lit in commerce under the guidance of Prof. P. C. Mishra three more Scholars have registered themselves under the D.Lit  Programme and pursuing their research work.

Prof. Ashok Kumar Mohanty is the recipient of Gold Medal for securing First Class First position in M. Com Examination of Berhampur University in 1981. He holds a Ph. D. degree in Commerce from Berhampur University. He has guided 07 Ph.D. Scholars and 02 D.Lit performing research in various fields like Technology Transfer in Automobile sectors, Export Import Study of Major Ports, UTI Saving Mobilization, NPA Management, Study of Foreign Banks, Study of Rural Infrastructure etc.. Apart from teaching and research he has acted as Comptroller of Finance, Deputy Registrar and Registrar of Berhampur University during 2010 to 2015. He was also the Head of the department of Commerce from 2000-2002.He has published more than 80 articles in various national and international journals. He has participated and presented papers in many conferences and seminars. His areas of interest include Banking and Finance. He is a life member of academic bodies like Indian Commerce Association, Indian Academy of Social Science and Orissa Commerce Association. He is the presently heading the P.G. Department of Commerce.

Dr. Rudra Prasanna Mahapatra joined the Department of Commerce, Berhampur University in the year 1984. He holds a Ph. D degree in Commerce from the Berhampur University. Currently he is the Professor of the Department of Commerce. His area of research is Finance. He has guided several doctoral and D. Lit students and has so publications to his credit. He was the Head, Department of Commerce, Berhampur University during 2002-2004. He has been a member of Screening Committee and Board of Studies of various Universities. He has visited various Universities of the country as a resource person, key note speaker and adjudicator of Ph. D thesis. He is also a member in the editorial board of a number of journals. Prof. Mahapatra is a Life Member of Orissa Commerce Association and Indian Commerce Association.

Dr. Gouri Sankar Lall holds Ph.D. degree in Commerce from Berhampur University. He is having twenty years of Post Graduate and M.Phil. teaching experience in Commerce, MFC and produced one Ph.D. scholar and more than a dozen of M.Phil. scholars. Currently he is working as Reader in Commerce, Berhampur University. Dr. Lall has published more than twenty research articles in various national and state journals of repute. He has six books to his credit. He regularly participates in national and international seminars, conferences and workshops and he has already attended fifty such events by contributing articles so far. His research interests include institutional Finance, Consumer Behaviour. He was heading the P.G. Department of Commerce, Berhampur University during the period 2011-13 and was the Dean, Commerce and Management, member of Senate, Academic Council and Board of Studies etc. of the University. He is the life member of academic bodies like Indian Commerce Association and Orissa Commerce Association. At present he is the Joint General Secretary of the Orissa Commerce Association a prestigious Association in the State.

Mr. Venkateswara Rao Bhanotu has obtained his Master of Commerce (M.Com) from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. He has qualified UGC NET-JRF. He has been teaching in the P.G. department of Commerce, Berhampur University since 2016. He is a life member of All India Commerce Association (AICA). He has attended many national and international seminars and conferences and presented papers. He has contributed and published research articles in various reputed national and international journals. His research interest is Accounting and Finance.

Mr.Maheswar Sethi has obtained his Master of Commerce from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. He has qualified UGC-NET-JRF. He has been teaching in the Department of Commerce, Berhampur University since 2016. Prior to this he has also qualified Odisha Public Service Commission (O.E.S) and served the Department of Higher Education, Government of Odisha as Lecturer for a period of 2.2 years. He has been conferred with awards like Posco Asia Fellowship and Chakradhar award for academic excellency. He is a life member of All India Commerce Association, Indian Accounting Association and All Orissa Commerce Association. He has attended many National and International seminars and conferences and presented papers. He has contributed and published research articles in reputed national and international journals. His research interest includes Accountig and Finance.

Seminar Library

The Department maintains a Seminar Library having more than 2000 books and journals of commerce and management for reference of the students

Computing

A well equipped Computer Lab with internet for the use of students.

Laboratories

The computer lab of the department is having more than 15 computers, printers,       photocopier, visualisers, power generator and LCD Projector

Student Project Work

As there is a paper of Summer Training Report and Seminar Presentation in M.F. C course the students have to do :

  • Internship programme during Summer Vacation
  • M.Com. Students have to prepare a project on any business activity in the 4th Semester (paper XVII)
  • MFC students have to undergo summer training spanning over four Weeks and at the end of 2nd Semester a report has to be prepared and presented.

At the end of the 4th Semester, the MFC students have to prepare a Dissertation on a subject  of the topic interest       (Paper 4.7).

Research

The department has undertaken the responsibility for the development of the business and industrial community in particular and the whole economy in general by offering the research level degrees of M.Phil & Ph.D programmes. The department has updated the regulation for these programmes. Since inception, the Department has already produced 87 Ph.D and 193 M.Phil scholars

Events

  • One-Day Students' Seminar on "Emotional Intelligence" on 14th Feb 2015. Speaker of the Occasion was Prof. U. C. Pattnaik, Academic Director of ISBM, Bhubaneswar.
  • One-Day workshop on Financial Inclusion: The Road Ahead on 27th July 2014. RBI Regional Head, Bhubaneswar Mr. P. K. Jena was the Chief Speaker of the Occasion.
  • The department has organised various seminars, workshops, refresher courses, training camps and conferences at frequent intervals in collaboration with UGC, UNICEF, ICAI, DICs, Stock Exchange, Mumbai and ICFAI. Since the inception of the Department in 1976, the department holds the editorial/registered office of the Orissa Commerce Association and published the Orissa Journal of Commerce till 2007. The department has linkage with national level institutions like Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWAI), and the institute of Chartered Financial Analysts of India (ICFAI), Hyderabad.  There has been faculty exchange programmes between the department and these institutions.
  • The department attracts memorial endowment funds for award of scholarship to the meritorious students and felicitate to an eminent person of South Orissa. Currently three such funds namely Late Narasimha Padhi Memorial Fund and the Late Justice Abhimanyu Misra Memorial Fund and Late Binod Bihari Biswasroy Memorial Fund are in operation.
