About Department

The Department of Economics was established in 1972 with two years Master Degree Course in Economics: n order to encourage research activities the M. Phil. course was introduced in 1979-80. The department also offers Ph. D. programme under the supervision of the faculty members.

Prof. Bhagabata Patro

Prof. Bhagabata Patro got his education from Khallikote College (Now Khallikote University), Berhampur from intermediate to M.A.(1972-78) and got his M.Phil(1982) and Ph.D(1992) from Berhampur University. He started his career as an Asst. Manager (Economic Investigation and Marketing) of DIC under the Industries Department of Government of Odisha. He joined Berhampur University as a Lecturer in Economics (Econometrics) on 29.10.1982. For period of 2 Years, he was on lien to UCO bank to work as the Junior Economist at Guwahati Divisional Office. He got selected as a Reader and joined the Department on 8.6.1995. On CAS promotion, he joined as a Professor on 8.6.2003. Currently he is the Head of the Department and also the Director of HHM Distance Education Centre, Berhampur University. Prof. Patro has successfully guided 32 candidates for M.Phil and 7 candidates for Ph.D. He has 65 publications of books, book articles and journal articles of national and international repute. He visited Beijing, China to attend the Annual Conference of the International Input-Output Association. Prof. Patro is a member of many national level professional associations and is a member of the Consultative Committee on State Budget of the finance Department , Government of Odisha.

Dr.(Mrs.) Amita Kumari Choudhury

Dr. Amita Kumari Choudhury holds M.A. degree in Economics from Khallikote College, Berhampur. She received her Ph.D in Economics from Berhampur University. She joined as Lecturer in Department of Economics, Berhampur University in the year 1982. She became Professor in 2004. She has thirty four years of experience in teaching and research. She has published more than thirty five research papers in national and International Journals. Three research scholars have been awarded Ph.D under her guidance. She has visited the University of York, U.K. under a World Bank Short-Term Grant. She has attended several national and international conferences and seminars. She is a life member of the International Institute of Development studies, The Indian Economic association, The Indian Econometric Society, The Indian Society for Ecological Economics and the Odisha Economic association.

Dr. Sudhakar Patra

Sudhakar Patra holds M.A degree in Applied Economics from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, M.Phil degree from JNU, New Delhi, Ph.D degree in Economics from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar and is professor in the Department of Economics, Berhampur University. He has been teaching Economics since 1988 at various educational Institutions i.e, Sri Venkateswar College, Delhi University, Govt. College, Phulbani, N.C. College, Jajpur, Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Ravenshaw University, Cuttack and Berhampur University, Berhampur. He has completed 4 research projects funded by South Asian Network for Development and Environmental Economics(SANDEE) and University Grants Commission. Seven research scholars have been awarded Ph.D under his guidance. He has participated in 20 international and 42 national/regional conferences/seminars/Workshops. He is life member of 15 professional Associations/Societies including The Indian Econometric Society(TIES), Indian Economics Association(IEA), Indian Society of labour Economics(ISLE), Indian Society of Agricultural Economics(ISAE). He has published 07 books, 28 papers in International Journals and 42 papers in National Journals and 26 book chapters in edited books. He has 12 times academic visit to different foreign countries including Thailand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal.

Dr. Sandhyarani Das

Dr. Sandhya Rani Das holds M.A and Ph.D degree from Berhampur University .She has 25 years of teaching experience. She has authored one book, and 40 research papers in leading journals of National and International repute and Chapters in edited books on different aspects of Economics and Management. Seven research scholars have earned their Ph.D degree and nineteen have earned M.Phil degree under her supervision. She has participated in 5 international and 50 national conferences. She was executive member of Indian Economic Association and life member of International Institute of Development Studies, The Indian Society for Ecological Economics and The Odisha Economic Association. She has attended a Workshop in Nepal on Environmental Economics organised by the Beijer Institute, An International Institute of Ecological Economics from 21st October to 7th November 1999, and visited Sri Lanka for academic purpose. As an active social being and responsible citizen she is also working for the development of rural women by helping them in formation of SHGs and by arranging health camps in far-flung villages of Odisha.

Mr. Bishnu Charan Behera

Mr. Bishnu Charan Behera did his gradutation and post graduation in Economics from Khallikote (Autonomous) College, Berhampur. He has qualified UGC-NET in the year 2006. He joined as Lectrer in the department in 2010. He has published about 07 articles in different National and International repute journals. He has more than six years of P.G. teaching experience. His research areas are Poverty, Financial Institutions and Markets and Development Economics. He is a member of Odisha Commerce Association. Now he is a programme officer Of NSS, Berhampur University. He is pursuing his Ph.D under the guidance of Prof. B.K. Panda.

Mr. Pabitra Singh

Mr. Pabitra Singh did his M.A. in Economics from Utkal University and M.Phil from University of Hyderabad. He has qualified UGC-NET in the year 2011. He joined as lecturer in the department in 2012. He has published about 03 articles in different National and International repute journals. He has more than three years of P.G. teaching experience. His research interests are Environmental Eeconomics, Mathematical Economics and Indian Economics. He is pursuing his Ph.D under the guidance of Prof. (Mrs). A.K. Choudhury.


The Department has an academic hall with LCD Projector and other facilities for conducting regular student seminars.

Seminar Library

The Department has a Library with good number of text and reference books and also recent volumes of few journals.


The Department is providing computing facilities to the students and research scholars using Econometrics softwares like LimDep, Gretle, E-Views and Statistical softwarse like SPSS and Strata.


The Department has a full-fledged computer laboratory with five Desktop Computers, three printers with Internet facilities to the students and scholars.


The department is functioning in the ground floor of 2nd humanities block with one HOD room, 3 class rooms, one seminar hall, one office room, one library-cum-store room, two computer rooms,5 faculty rooms and three toilets.
